The new version of Office 2007 (Word, Excel, etc...) adds an 'X' to the end of the extension.  For example .doc becomes .docx.   Older versions of Office cannot open these files unless they have installed the compatibility patch.  The link below will take you to the Microsoft webpage to download and run this patch.
